Biography:

Tirthankar Bandyopadhyay is a post-doctoral research associate at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR), New Delhi- a premier autonomous research organization dedicated to plant biology research in India. He is currently researching on biological nitrogen use in foxtail millet, a model C4 grass as part of CINTRIN (Cambridge-India Network for Translational Research in Nitrogen) initiative sponsored by Newton-Bhabha fund.

Tirthankar completed his PhD. from the University of Gauhati in with masters and pre-PhD specialization in plant biotechnology from University of Gauhati and Madurai Kamraj University, India. His interest has been primarily focussed on stress physiology and functional genomics of major agronomically important crops namely tea, rice and recently foxtail millet. Tirthankar’s doctoral research was the first ever endeavour to characterize herbivory induced tea transcriptome which revealed novel insights into aspects of stress tolerance in the crop. His post-doctoral engagement at NIPGR was to identify novel genes regulating morpho-physiological responses and adaptations due to limited zinc provisioning in a temporal specific manner.

Under the CINTRIN project, Tirthankar is involved in screening diverse foxtail millet accessions in terms of their natural biological nitrogen use efficiencies by characterizing their morpho-physiology and identifying potential nitrogen sensitive (NS) and insensitive (NIS) accessions for subsequent pre- breeding. Furthermore, he intends to employ genome wide association studies to identify crucial genes/QTLs regulating nitrogen use in foxtail millet so that nitrogen use efficient plants can be obtained through new and conventional crop improvement approaches in future.
